MOSCOW, September 26 (Itar-Tass) —— The level of alcoholism and drug use in Russia may cause a national catastrophe, and the question of forced treatment of drug addicts and those suffering from alcoholism is ripe, Russia’s Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev told a governmental commission on prevention of crime on Monday.

“The scale of alcohol and drug addiction in this country threatens growing into a national catastrophe,” he said stressing that development of these problems with the youth causes special worries.

He said that the governmental commission had received several suggestions.

“Many heads of Russia’s regions are adamant it necessary to discuss the practice of using forced treatment of alcohol and drug addicts,” Nurgaliyev said. “We shall discuss an issue of presenting to the Russian government of the initiatives, including legal ones.”

After that, the governmental commission continued the meeting behind closed doors.
