VLADIVOSTOK, September 22 (Itar-Tass) — Typhoon Roke approached the South Kurils on Thursday and brought a heavy rain and wind gusts that reached hurricane force - up to 37 metres per second.
The whole small fishing fleet took shelter on the windward side of the Kuril chain. Large trawlers and floating factories left the islands and are in a gale at sea, there are no deep-water bays at the Kuril Islands where large vessels can find shelter from the typhoon, the Sakhalin service for monitoring the fishing fleet said.
According to meteorologists, Typhoon Roke on Thursday will be passing along the Kurils chain all day long and then will move to the Pacific Ocean, and the weather will somewhat improve.
Typhoon Roke (international designation: 1115, PAGASA name: Onyok, JTWC designation: 18W) is an active tropical cyclone that affected Japan, where some areas were damaged by another typhoon just a few weeks ago.
