Protest action held outside Ukrainian parliament building

Clashes of protesters with the police took place outside the building of the Supreme Rada (parliament) of Ukraine on Tuesday

KIEV, September 20 (Itar-Tass) —— Clashes of protesters with the police took place outside the building of the Supreme Rada (parliament) of Ukraine on Tuesday. Veterans of the combat operation in Afghanistan and liquidators of the accident at the Chernobyl NPP pushed aside metal barriers surrounding the parliament building and tried to break into it. The police are still keeping the crowd back.

Several thousand people took part in the protest action against the draft law, which provides for the cancellation of privileges for 16 categories of people, including veterans of the Afghanistan operation and Chernobyl liquidators. The protesters are chanting “Shame” and are holding posters with the inscriptions “It is preferable to die on foot, than to live on one’s knees,” “You killed our sons, but do not kill their mothers” and “We are against cancellation of social privileges and payments.”

Participants in the protest action adopted a statement, which says that if the legislators do not heed their opinion, they will start a protest action for an indefinite period of time, demanding “the disbandment of the parliament.”
