Belarus faces new price hikes for essential foods

The government raises maximal selling prices for beef and pork by 20 percent

MINSK, September 20 (Itar-Tass) — Belarus has once again raised the selling prices for bread, dairy products and meat.

In compliance with the decree issued by the Ministry of Economy, as of September 20 the prices for rye bread, long loaf and wheat crisp bread grow by 10 percent. The same increase will encompass prices for milk, fermented milk (kefir), sour cream and cottage cheese.

The government raises maximal selling prices for beef and pork by 20 percent.

In early September the selling prices for bread and dairy products grew by 5 percent, while in late August meat prices jumped by 10 percent.

Retail prices for some cigarette brands will face a 50 percent increase.

According to the official data, as of January 1, 2011, Belarus’ inflation reached 63.4 percent.
