Russia may join WTO by yearend – Pascal Lamy

“The probability that Russia joins the organisation before end of the current year is very high now,” he said

PARIS, September 16 (Itar-Tass) —— Russia may join the World Trade Organisation over the current year already, the organisation’s Director General Pascal Lamy said on Friday.

“The probability that Russia joins the organisation before end of the current year is very high now,” he said. The decision may be made over the WTO ministerial meeting due in December.

As of now, Russia’s economy is the biggest one in the countries outside the WTO. The negotiations on joining the organisation, which Russia has been having since 1993, are at the final stage now. Russia has bilateral agreements on access to markets for goods and services with all 60 members of the working group on Russia’s joining the WTO. In September 2010, the Russian Federation settled all disputes on bilateral trade with the USA, and in December of 2010 – with the European Union.
