Russia supports UN’s humanitarian efforts in Libya

Alongside this efforts are being taken to clear the territory of Libya of mines,” said the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman

MOSCOW, September 15 (Itar-Tass) —— Russia supports the UN in its humanitarian efforts in Libya and is ready to provide all necessary assistance, Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said on Thursday.

The diplomat stressed "the need to clearly define specific goals and objectives of the UN agencies to avoid duplication of activities."

"In order to improve the difficult humanitarian situation in Libya the United Nations has prepared an action plan that identifies priority activities of UN agencies in that country", Lukashevich said. In particular, "in the short term, the UN high commissioner for humanitarian affairs plans to focus efforts on rebuilding social infrastructure systems, water and electricity, provision of hospitals and medical facilities with medicines and medical equipment, skilled medical personnel, and supplies of the population with fuel and food," Lukashevich said.

"Alongside this efforts are being taken to clear the territory of Libya of mines,” said the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman. “In the near future, the UN Organization for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs plans to send humanitarian missions to some areas of Libya, in particular, southern and eastern ones, affected by war."
