MOSCOW, September 10 (Itar-Tass) —— The Russian Foreign Ministry voiced concern about unrests near the Israeli Embassy in Cairo and urged all parties to show restraint.
“On September 9, mass demonstrations resumed near in front of the Israeli Embassy in Cairo in connection with the death of five Egyptian military men on the border with Israel in August. The protesters managed to bring down the ‘security wall’ built in front of the embassy recently and tear off the Israeli flag,” the ministry said on Saturday, September 10.
Moscow is “seriously concerned about these events and urges all sides to show restraint and refrain from further escalation of tensions around the Israeli Embassy in Cairo”.
“We hope that this incident will not lead to a serious deterioration of Egyptian-Israeli relations which are an important factor facilitating the Middle East settlement,” the ministry said.
It urged the Egyptian authorities to take additional measures in order to protect foreign diplomatic missions.
As a result of the riot in front of the Israeli Embassy in Cairo and pillaging in the building, one person died and 450 were injured, including 45 policemen. Seventeen rioters wee detained. The Interior Ministry has imposed a state of emergency. Tel Aviv has recalled its ambassador and embassy staff.
The riot followed the death of five Egyptian military men erroneously killed by Israeli aircraft on the border on August 18 after a terrorist act in Eilat.
