MOSCOW, September 8 (Itar-Tass) —— The matches of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) will resume not earlier than on September 12 over the death of the ice hockey team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in the air crash. Chairman of the KHL Board of Directors Vyacheslav Fetisov, KHL President Alexander Medvedev and Chairman of the KHL Trade Union Andrei Kovalenko have decided to postpone the matches.
Lokomotiv Yaroslavl will play in the current KHL season with a youth squad or a team made up of the players of other teams. Alexander Medvedev stated that many hockey players trained in Lokomotiv, but contracted in other KHL clubs, expressed the wish to play for the team, which was left without the main squad.
The airplane Yak-42, which was carrying the ice hockey team Lokomotiv to Minsk, crashed two kilometers away from the airport falling in three parts, two of which dropped in a Volga tributary. The airplane caught fire in the crash. Only two people survived from 45 passengers onboard the airplane. They are on the critical list.
