BAKU, September 2 (Itar-Tass) — Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, was confirmed to compete against five other cities to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, the vice-president of the National Olympic Committee, Chingiz Guseinzade told reporters on Friday.
“The International Olympic Committee has ratified Azerbaijan’s application and confirmed Baku as a candidate to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games,” he said.
Azerbaijan plans to set up an organizing committee to prepare all necessary procedures, he said.
“It is expected that Baku’s first presentation of an applicant city for the 2020 Games will take place in February 2012,” Guseinzade said.
The National Olympic Committee will prepare its bid book and will submit it to the IOC for consideration. In general, the presentation period takes two years.
The 2020 host city will be elected in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in September 2013.
Among other applicants are Doha, Istanbul, Madrid, Rome and Tokyo.
