VLADIVOSTOK, August 31 (Itar-Tass) — Vladivostok mayor Igor Pushkaryov signed a resolution recommending residents and visitors not to wade deep into the water on almost all popular beaches because of shark threat.
In the resolution, titled "on measures to prevent shark attack accidents in sea basins," shark warning applies to beaches on the island of Russky, Popov, Reineke, and Rikord, which are visited by dozens of thousands of tourists from all over the far east every year, due to their pristine marine environment and scuba diving opportunities.
The Peschany peninsula, and dozens of places of recreation, mostly on islands of Peter the Great Gulf are on the list, too. Services of two municipal districts of Vladivostok have been ordered to issue shark warnings and evaluate beachgoers in the event of detecting sharks.
In the August 17 shark attack, the first ever in the Primorye Territory, a 25-year-old man was seriously injured. He was hospitalized with multiple thigh and body injuries, and lost both hands.
The shark attacked him in Telyakovsky Bay in southern Khasan district.
On August 18, a shark inflicted serious leg injuries on a 16-year-old adolescent near the Zheltukhin island.
On August 27, a 26-year-ol resident of the village of Slavyanka, Khasan district, received light shoulder and body wounds in a shark attack.
The authorities set up a special center for catching the predators. Experts said various species of shark had been involved in the attacks. So far, they have been unable to catch the killer shark.
The press service of the Emergency Situations Ministry's department for the Primorye Territory has said the only way to avoid shark attack in the Sea of Japan on the Primorye Territory coast is to keep away from water until the attacking sharks have been caught.
