Eight people have been killed and another 23 have been injured in explosions in Chechnya's capital Grozny

MOSCOW, August 31 (Itar-Tass) — Eight people have been killed and another 23 have been injured in explosions in Chechnya's capital Grozny, Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin told Itar-Tass.

"In the evening of August 30, three persons in Bogdan Khmelnitsky Street blasted themselves when police tried to detain them," Markin said.

"Seven people died on the spot, and another 23 were injured. Several hours later, another victim died in hospital despite the doctors' efforts to save him," he added.

There were seven police officers among the eight fatalities, and 18 police among the 22 injured. A SK investigator is also among the injured. He was near the scene of the explosion on his way from work and was wounded as he was trying to help the injured, the SK representative said.

Criminal proceedings were opened under five articles of Russia's Criminal Code, including "murder" and "attempted murder of law-enforcement personnel."

Specialists of the SK's central office are on their way to Chechnya to help investigate the terrorist attack.

"Taking into account the public stir and a large number of fatalities, and with the view of a most comprehensive investigation, the criminal case was opened under five articles of Russia's Criminal Code "attempted murder of law-enforcement personnel," "murder," "attempted murder," "Illegal turnover of weapons," and "illegal manufacturing of weapons."

The case will be handled by the SK's department for the North Caucasus Federal District.
